Congratulations to Angela Sibley

Mr Bill Fernley (right), Chairman of Penicuik's Community Council, presented Angela with a framed certificate as Penicuik Citizen of the Year 2010 in the Town Hall on Saturday, 22nd May 2010.
The Community Council strongly believes in the importance of recognising the service which many who work quietly behind the scenes give in their local community and beyond. It does so annually with the award, on behalf of the people of Penicuik, of Penicuik Citizen of the Year.
In making the presentation, Bill said: “To talk to Angela is to appreciate the sincerity, enthusiasm, commitment and sheer energy of someone who believes in the importance of serving others.
“It stems in the first instance from her affiliation, over several decades, to the
Penicuik Branch of the Mothers Union. I happen to know from personal experience
what a strong force for good that is in the community (Bill’s mother-
“It has led to her volunteer work for the Broomhill Day Centre. Angela is modest enough to say she was not a founder member of the Centre but she has worked there from its beginnings 27 years ago and that's good enough in my book. She speaks with such enthusiasm of the pleasure she gets from being in the frequently humorous company of the elderly people who go. That in itself is a pleasure to hear. She is also Chairman of its management committee. That is no mean compliment to her commitment. It extends further to being general handyman, cleaner and bottle washer as the occasion demands.
“Angela was indeed a founder member, again as a Volunteer, of the crèche for the young children of mothers visiting their husbands and partners in Edinburgh Prison. I was once a member of the Scottish Prison Service and so know at first hand the vital importance of that kind of service in helping to maintain family links at a time of great stress for those concerned. And of the expression of sheer humanity which underpins it.
“The motto of the Scottish Prison Service is "Dare to Care". Take it beyond the Prison Service and it personifies all that Angela does and has done. That includes a long list of other things, not only in Penicuik but nationally and, with her committee work, internationally too. Meals on Wheels, the WRVS, Christian Concern for families worldwide, the Bethany Trust for homeless and vulnerable people. I could go on but would run out of breath.”
Bill also paid tribute to the support provided by Angela’s husband Alan (left in the photo) to enable her to do the many things she does.
World Day of Prayer in Penicuik
The World Day of Prayer Service in 2009 was prepared by the Christian women of Papua New Guinea on the theme was ‘In Christ There Are Many Members, Yet One Body’.
